How to choose the best compound bow for hunting – Beginners Guide

compound bow for hunting

A compound bow is one which uses pulleys and cables to bend its limbs. The limbs are usually more rigid than those of longbows and recurve bows. It makes them more efficient than other types of bows. Their rigid nature increases their accuracy by reducing their sensitivity to humidity and temperature changes. Best  compound bow for hunting can be soft-drawing or hard-drawing

They have eccentric pulleys that have a bending radius. As the pulleys rotate, the string is usually drawn back. They have two cam tracks. The inner cam track is mechanically connected to the limbs while the outer cam track allows the bowstring to run through. Different draw profile can be created by manipulating the cam tracks' shapes.

A let-off occurs when the cam profiles pass the center. Some compound bows self-lock at full draw if the draw stops. A compound's central riser is made of carbon fibre, aluminium or magnesium alloy. The limbs can take large forces and high tensile. They store all the energy in a bow. The average draw weight is around 50 pounds, and it facilitates arrow speeds of up to 112m/s.

Arrows that are used with compound bows are made of aluminium allow or carbon fibre. Modern bows are stiffer than a recurve bow's draw-weight. The arrows don't bend a lot around the riser especially when making a shot. The bow can be fine-tuned by adjusting the nock point or the arrow rest.

Arrow shafts are produced having varying weights, lengths and stiffness to accommodate different lengths and draw weights which match archers'' physical attributes, styles and preferences.

How to Hunt Whitetail Deer with a Compound Bow

The following tips can help you in your whitetail deer hunting expedition.

1. Scout In Advance

Some people hunt on leases since such large areas are designated for lawful hunting. You should frequently scout your hunting spot for several months. Create a ground blind in a field which deer visit frequently. Look for signs such as antler rubs, droppings, deer trails and tracks.

2.Setup a Tree Stand

You should place a tree stand in the area which deer frequent. It should be within a good shooting range of about 20 meters. The chosen tree should be at least 16 feet high and 8 inches wide.

If it is not present, you can create a ground blind. You should do it at least one month before the deer hunting season commences so that the animals can get accustomed to it. The blind or tree stand should be set up in the afternoon as, by that time, the deer are away. Trim trees surrounding the stand to create several shooting lanes.

3.Arrive at the Tree Stand

On the long awaited hunting day, ensure that you are settled in the blind or the stand before dawn. Hunt up to 11 am and take a break up to 3 pm. By 4 pm; you should be settled again to continue hunting until dusk.

Throughout the period when you will be settled in the stand, be quiet and still. You should spot the deer first before they notice you. As a deer approach, you should shoot it within three seconds before it spots you.

If you make an accurate shot, you have only one more chance to make another one. Before shooting, aim behind the front leg. If you hit it, the arrow will reach the lungs and kill the deer instantly.

4.Follow the Trail

In case you fatally injure the animal, wait for several minutes before you start looking for blood trails. It will most probably be within several hundred meters from where you shot it. If you track it immediately, it could be excited and run away. It would minimize your chances of catching it.

5.Prepare to Field Dress the Meat

Get a dressing kit before hunting. You will need a sharp hunting knife, rope, a lantern and plastic gloves that thoroughly cover your hands.

6.Dress the Your Game

Quickly remove the deer's internal organs to prevent bacterial growth. It would lower the meat's quality. The dressing makes the deer easier and lighter to transport.

You should not jerk the arrow as it could also reduce the meat's quality. Clean the animal first and then cut it deeply. Remove the embedded arrow only when you can access it.

 7.Secure the Deer

Once you dress the carcass, put the head in between the front legs and tightly tie them together. Make a loop and tie the hind legs with the same rope.

8.Transport the Game Meat

Upon taking the deer back to the hunting camp, hang it from its head such that it doesn't touch the ground. It allows blood to drain out freely. Properly rinse the body cavity with a water pipe. Skin the deer, rinse it, process it then deep freeze it.

9.Maintain Your Compound Bow

After a hunting expedition, check your bow for possible damage. Remove grime and dirt by wiping it with a soft cloth. Coat its synthetic cables and string with bowstring wax after every week. Coat the axles regularly with a good lubricant. When you are not using the compound bow, keep it in its case and place it away from heat sources.

Bow Hunting Whitetail Deer Early Season
